Genealogy Page

As my interests lie mainly in research of my family from Sheffield UK most of the page is dedicated to facts etc from around Sheffield. For anyone interested in searching for their ancestors I have included a list of web sites that may be of some help.
This page is in its early development, therefore at the present I can only offer some photos I have  of  Sheffield, mostly around the Pitsmoor area of my childhood.   Gordon Lawton

Photo List.
     1.     Grimesthorpe Rd looking towards the top of Torbay Rd taken in 1982 but has  not        changed much since before WW2.

        2.    Petre Street in 1964 - where Lyons Street crossed Petre St.

        3.    Petre Street in 1982 -  This shot is very nearly the same position as in 1964 - Note the only reminder of what used to be is the post box on the corner.

        4.    Wood hill, more commonly known as Smiths' Field, looking up the hill where Grimesthorpe Rd runs along the top, taken in 1982. Strangely no buildings have ever been built on the hill, yet very close by were tightly packed terraced houses.

        5.    Harleston Street taken in 1982 from Petre St, all the houses have been knocked down and rather a dismal view of the Don Valley over the steel works to Attercliffe.

        6.    Sutherland Rd. 1982, in contrast to Harleston St. some of the houses are still standing, these houses today are about 100 years old. I remember my wife's grandmother saying she moved into one when they were new and she was a little girl, she would have been 110 if still alive.
       7.   Malton Street, the large houses on the left backed onto Burngreave Cemetery, taken in 1982 some of the terraced houses on the right have already been cleared away.

        8.   Burngreave School as seen from Malton St. in 1982

        9.   Ellesmere Rd 1982 looking from the intersection of Lyons Street upto where it meets Grimesthorpe Rd. The building on the left was a Mormon Temple in the 50's, at the time of the photo was a Sihk Temple.

        10.   Sutherland Rd baths was a very popular swimming pool/public bath/public laundry this was the site of the baths looking from Sutherland Rd up Maxwell St. The large building is part of Ellesmere School.

        11.   All Saints church at the intersection of Lyons St. & Sutherland Rd. 1963, a prominent land mark in Sheffield for 100 years, unfortunately was knocked down due to all the houses around being cleared. A sad loss of a very beautiful church. Photo taken from Malton St.

        12.    St. Peters church, the replacement for All Saints built on the same spot 1982. Photo taken from  same place as all Saints Picture 1963 on Malton Street.  The building in the foreground is the rear of the old Mormon Temple.

        13. Map of the area that the above pictures are from. The map is  pre 1970.

       14.    Map of Pitsmoor around 1990
