INVITATION: JOIN THE FRIENDS OF GLUEPOT RESERVE

Birds Australia Gluepot Reserve is Australia's largest community owned and managed conservation reserve. Situated 64 km from Waikerie and the River Murray, the reserve is managed and operated entirely by volunteers. Some 54,390 ha in size, it is home to 17 nationally threatened species of birds, 50 species of reptiles and 12 species of bats, some of which are nationally threatened. There are few ares of the world that support such a concentration of threatened species.

The Reserve is part of the largest block of intact mallee left in Australia, and is listed on the Register of the National Estate. It is the 'jewel in the crown' of Australia's National Reserve System and is the largest area of land covered by a Heritage Agreement in South Australia.

By successfully combining the elements of biodiversity conservation and land management, scientific research and monitoring and sustainable ecotourism, Gluepot Reserve has taken conservation management into a new era. The Reserve is providing an international 'model' to show that sustainable use of the landscape is both feasible and desirable. A highly successful program of this size and complexity is unique in Australian land management and serves to increase awareness of the environmental issues surrounding this highly endangered area of Australian Wilderness. During 2003, Gluepot was the winner of 12 major awards for the environment, conservation, science and eco tourism.

The type of help to be provided by the Friends Group will include: conservation and upgrade of historic sites, revegetation, weed and feral animal management, development and maintenance of walking trails, wildlife management, wildlife surveys and monitoring, assisting research personnel, writing and information work, administrative and computer work, maintenance of the library and herbarium, photography, building projects, fund raising etc.

The Friends of Gluepot welcomes people of all ages, nationalities, and locations who care about Gluepot Reserve and its' environment. No offer is turned away - there is something for everyone whether you are young or old, male or female. Friends are especially beneficial because of their varied skills and experience, caring about nature, and a concern for the type of world they are handing on to their grandchildren.

The invitation is also open to your family and friends who may be interested in supporting the Reserve. . If you know of any one else who would like to become involved in the Friends of Gluepot, they are most welcome to attend, or they can contact the Chair of the Friends Group (see below), or Ian Falkenberg (DEH Liaison person) on (08) 8892 3025.
